Spartan Trap |
| After giving up 2 early runs and enduring a line-drive to the kneecap in the 5th inning, Corey Hickox delivers a gutsy, inspired performance on the hill to win the decisive 5th game of the Rhode Island Independent Amateur Baseball League finals. Hickox, who also won game 1 of the series with a shut-down performance and was 7-1 (including post-season) with a save this year, pitched 8 innings on Tuesday night at Cimilore Field, striking out 4 and walking 3. Leading off the second inning, Designated-Hitter Dave Cimini, who went 8-1 including playoffs as a pitcher this season, deposited a majestic homerun deep into the night over the left-field fence to tie the game at 1-1. After Cimini's shot, PT would go on to grind out 3 insurance runs runs in support of Hickox off TRAP's lefty starter Chris Babcock. "Submarine Sally" Andy Devereaux, hammering down his 5th save of the post-season, threw a silent 1-2-3 9th inning to secure the championship for Premium Tile.
Competing for its 6th title and bringing home championship number 3 since the inception of the league in 1999, Premium Tile was led by league comissioner and first-baseman/leadoff hitter Todd Guevremont. "The Ocho" resurrected his winning franchise with a two-out, line-drive RBI single off TRAP reliever Bob Venditto in the 8th inning of game 4 of the championship series, which PT won 9-5 with the benefit of 9 two-out runs.
11 years since his entrance into the league, former Warwick Comet Matt Rhodes wins his first Nicholas Graham Trophy with a steadfast offensive approach and serving as captain of an ace-laden ship behind the dish. First-Ballot RIIABL Hall-of-Famer Dave "Beaver" Harrington dams up all critics delivering perhaps the best season of his storied, 3-championship title career. Fellow certain Hall-of-Famers Rich Pacino and Tim Costa cement their RIIABL legacies, each bringing home another championship ring. After throwing 34 innings and posting an impressive 1.06 ERA during the regular season, Pacino shrugged off a groin tear to inspire PT to its championship victory, the second of Pacino's historic career in this league. Costa, PT's feared, decade-long 3-hitter, stayed the course to earn his 3rd title as a player in the RIIABL.
Assuming his new role as center-fielder of the best offensive and defensive outfield in the league, former Westerly High School stand-out JJ Sorensen delivers the most consistent season of his turbulent career serving as PT's clean-up hitter and taking home his first cup. Despite his obligations roaming his territory, Adam "Sasquatch" Northup found time to produce MVP-caliber statistics protecting his long-time teammate Sorensen in the lineup and joining Sorensen as a first-time champion. Learning under the tutelage of their veteran teammates, young guns Nick Benoit and John Jacobellis matured in front of the league's eyes, becoming two of the most exciting and dynamic players in the RIIABL with Benoit taking on the role as the 3 hitter and Jacobellis leading the team in both homeruns and stolen bases.
St. Joseph's of Maine closer Devereaux carried the PT offense in the first half of the season, then assumed his role as the most dominant big-game closer in the league down the stretch. "Smokey" Joe Sorensen, connecting on fastballs, delivered two pivotal, game-deciding hits to pick up his teammates and contribute to the title run. Derryl Padula saved Premium Tile from 3 forfeits and pitched "lights-out" in spot-starts to ease the burden of PT's loaded pitching staff. The staff, which also included Roger Williams University pitcher and former Westerly High School ace Chris Anderson, who fired a complete-game victory in game 4 of the finals, led Premium Tile to its 29-6 overall record. After losing the first two games of the season, PT won 29 out of its last 33 games behind its dominant staff of Hickox, Cimini, Pacino, Anderson, Padula, and relievers Northup, Costa, Jacobellis and Devereaux.

| An instant classic at Paine field between Westcott and the TRAP in game 4. Will Dawson took the mound in the 4th inning after starting pitcher Dan Johnson was ejected. Dawson pitched into the 8th inning leaving with 2 outs, 2 men on and only giving up 1 run to that point. Closer, Bob Venditto entered the game and gave up a pass ball to tie the game at 4 before striking out the batter to end the 8th inning. Tied at 4 with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, Pat Freeman of Westcott hit what would have been a walk-off HR but 6'5 Dawson who stayed in the game in right field nearly jumped over the fence to rob the HR. In the top of the 10th inning with 2 outs Bob Venditto hit the game winning HR, his second HR in as many days and then closed the door in the bottom of the 10th. Andrew Flynn pitched a great game for Westcott going all 10 innings on 3 days rest for his second CG of the series. TRAP wins the series 3-1 and will head to the finals for the third straight season. |

Premium scored a run in the bottom of the fifth; the Marlins answered with one in the top of the sixth. Eight innings later, when the game was suspended at 11:30, Neal and Pacino had each hurled 15 innings facing 62 and 53 batters, respectively, with Neal fanning 19. The game was resumed on June 25 but, with both pitchers having already thrown 8 innings that day, neither was available. In the top of the 18th, the Marlins' Dave Remy walked, advanced on consecutive singles by Dan Furtado and Bob Rodericks, and scored on a single by Neal. Ryan Pimentel then walked to force in a run, and Nick Karelelkas followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Marlins up by 3. Furtado then retired the side earning the win. There was only one extra base hit in the game -- a 6th inning triple by Premium's Nick Benoit. |
